You Don’t Have to Feel Close to Take a Faithful Step

You Don’t Have to Feel Close to Take a Faithful Step
Some days, prayer comes easily. Other days, you sit down, try to find the words, and feel very little. It can leave you wondering whether you are doing something wrong or whether God has somehow moved farther away. A quiet morning with no strong emotion can begin to feel like a failed attempt at faith.
But love is expressed in more than a feeling. Jesus calls us to love God and our neighbors in Matthew 22:37–39, and in John 13:34–35 He makes our love for one another a visible sign of belonging to Him. There is room for that love to take shape in ordinary decisions, including on days when enthusiasm is hard to find. We can choose patience, honesty, and care without waiting for the right mood.
The cross gives us a foundation deeper than the emotion of a particular moment. Romans 5 points us to God’s love demonstrated through Christ’s death. We can bring our uncertainty to Him and still take a faithful step. We can say, “Lord, I need Your help,” and choose to love the person in front of us. Feelings matter, but they do not have to decide every next action.
Questions for your week
• When have I mistaken an absence of strong feelings for an absence of God’s care?
• What would faithfulness look like in the situation I am facing right now?
• Who might need my kindness even when it does not come easily?
One faithful step
Before next Sunday, choose one person and do one concrete act of kindness without expecting anything in return.
Keep it small enough to follow through. It might be giving someone your full attention, offering practical help, or responding gently in a difficult conversation. Choose one action, and let it be a way of expressing your love for God. You do not have to wait until your feelings catch up.
At Hope Church Clayton, we want to grow in faith together and make Christ’s love visible through the way we care for our neighbors. That is part of being The Little Church With A Big Heart.
If this encouraged you, share it with someone who has been wondering whether their faith still counts on the quiet days. You are also welcome to learn more about Hope Church and worship with us Sundays at 10:30 a.m., in person or online: https://hopeclayton.org/.
