When You’re Showing Up, but Your Heart Isn’t In It

When You’re Showing Up, but Your Heart Isn’t In It
You can keep showing up and still miss the closeness you once felt with God. You know when to stand, what to sing, and where help is needed. But somewhere between the responsibilities and disappointments of everyday life, time with Him has begun to feel like another obligation. That can be hard to admit, especially when everyone assumes your faith is doing fine.
Jesus connects loving Him with keeping His commandments in John 14:15. Our actions matter, and so does the heart behind them. It is possible to become so occupied with doing things for God that we give little attention to our relationship with Him. Recognizing that distance gives us something honest to bring into prayer.
David’s request in Psalm 51:12 offers a place to begin: asking God to restore the joy of His salvation. We can ask for renewal, too. We do not have to manufacture enthusiasm before approaching God or find impressive words to explain ourselves. We can begin with a simple desire to know Him more closely again.
A few questions to carry into your week
• Where am I going through the motions in my relationship with God?
• What do I miss about the times when prayer, worship, or serving felt more personal?
• What would I say to God about that distance if I stopped trying to sound like I had everything together?
One small invitation for Monday
Set aside five unhurried minutes each day this week to pray, “Lord, renew my love for You.”
Let that be the starting point. Some days you may have much more to say. Other days, those few words may be enough. You do not need to produce a particular feeling or judge whether the time was successful. Simply make room to be with Him.
As the week unfolds, notice whether making that space changes how you approach an ordinary moment: listening to someone, responding patiently, or offering help. A renewed love for God has somewhere to go in the lives we share with others.
At Hope Church Clayton, we want to keep growing in faith together and sharing Christ’s love through practical care for our neighbors. That is the heart of The Little Church With A Big Heart.
If someone came to mind while you were reading, consider sharing this with them. And if you would like a church family to walk alongside you, you are welcome to learn more about Hope Church and join us for Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m., in person or online: https://hopeclayton.org/.
