Our Story

Humble Beginnings

Standing On Historic Ground

Our story is about people coming together to worship, grow in faith, care for one another, and serve our neighbors.  Today, we are grateful to call the historic white chapel on Amelia Church Road home. While a church is far more than a building, there is something meaningful about gathering in a place shaped by generations of prayer, hospitality, and community.

The chapel has a remarkable story of its own. For well over a century, this ground has been a place where people have gathered in faith, welcomed neighbors, and built relationships. Its beautifully preserved white-sided walls and iconic steeple continue to stand as a familiar symbol along Amelia Church Road.

As Hope Church writes its own chapter here, we are honored to carry forward the spirit of open doors, genuine care, and heartfelt community that has long been part of this place. Around here, we like to say we are “The Little Church With a Big Heart,” and that spirit continues to shape the story we are building together today.
The history of this sacred plot began in the late 1880s, born from a simple desire to connect with neighbors and speak straight to the heart. Long before a permanent foundation was poured or timbers were cut, the very first gatherings took place nearby in the living room of a local resident named Amelia Austin. Believing that a community should accept people exactly as they are, she opened her home to her neighbors, creating a warm, welcoming space where a small house-church could take root.

As that early circle of believers grew, the need for a dedicated house of worship became clear. By November of 1886, land was officially secured along the rural stretch of dirt that would eventually bear her name: Amelia Church Road.

Local craftsmen set to work building a classic, timeless wood-frame chapel on the site. Deliberate and built to last, the chapel doors officially opened to the community at the dawn of the twentieth century, hosting its very first service in January 1904. For decades, this intimate, sun-drenched sanctuary served as a steady anchor for local families—surviving shifting eras, economic trials, and the steady growth of the Clayton area by focusing on what mattered most: loving the people right in front of them.

Growing Through the Generations

Throughout the 1900s, the little chapel grew alongside its community, receiving various structural updates—including the raising of its prominent, soaring steeple in 1981.

Eventually, as the surrounding county flourished, a larger, separate modern facility was constructed on the campus footprint in 2008 to accommodate a expanding local congregation.

Rather than allowing the original 1904 chapel to fade into the past or become a quiet museum relic, the property owners made the intentional choice to preserve its classic architecture. They knew that this intimate building still had a massive purpose to serve.

That beautiful act of preservation cleared the path for an entirely new chapter of local ministry—one that would carry the foundational legacy of living-room hospitality forward into a brand-new generation.

Still Writing the Story

Today, the historic little white chapel is experiencing a vibrant, joyful spiritual renewal. It is no longer just a monument to yesterday; it is a living, breathing house of modern worship. As the current home of Hope Church Clayton, these historic walls now echo with contemporary praise, casual community fellowship, and Gospel-centered teaching every single week.

We are incredibly grateful to gather in a space built on a foundation of open homes and open hearts. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here. We invite you to sit in these historic pews, experience our casual and accepting atmosphere, and become part of the ongoing story that God is writing under this iconic steeple today.
